Carbon Offset Cruising

Carbon Offset Cruising

OUR MISSION

Enriching lives through travel by benefiting our environment and the wider communities. We are aiming to have all cruises achieving net zero carbon by 2030.

Beyond Travel is working towards carbon neutrality by offsetting carbon emissions.

Mission: to reduce the negative effects of carbon emissions. Embarking on the road to carbon neutrality

My personal goal is to lead businesses along the road to carbon neutrality. Since studying and researching carbon I have become passionate about our climate and creating a carbon zero future.

So… what is carbon neutrality and why is it important for Beyond Travel to be involved?

Carbon neutrality is achieving a net zero output by cancelling the negative carbon emissions due to offsetting. Beyond Travel as a business in tourism, is aiming to neutralise its carbon footprint generated from travel products like cruising.

Carbon change is already affecting the entire world, with extreme weather conditions such as drought, heat waves, heavy rain, floods and landslides becoming more frequent. Other consequences of the rapidly changing climate include rising sea levels, ocean acidification and loss of biodiversity.

The global cruise ship industry is growing faster than the rest of tourism. Over twenty years, the average annual passenger growth rate has been about 7%.

Figure 1, represents the number of cruise ship passengers from 2009 t0 2020 worldwide. Excluding the 2020 outlier due to the global pandemic, this highlights how dramatically the increase in cruise ship popularity is.

WHAT CAN WE DO TOGETHER TO REDUCE THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CARBON EMISSIONS?
  • Packing lighter; the heavier the luggage the more fuel it takes to transport it by place, bus, car, train or boat. By packing lightly this reduces fuel use and this, the amount of carbon emitted
  • Efficient transportation; by using tour buses and ride shares instead of individual transport this reduces the amount of vehicles emitting carbon into the atmosphere
  • Eating locally; by eating from local cuisine instead of importing food this reduces the individuals carbon footprint of the meal and also supports the local economy
OFFSETTING CARBON

Carbon offsetting is one way to balance the unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions produced from tourism. A carbon offset is generated by an activity that either prevents the release of, reduces, or removes GHG emissions from the atmosphere.

Emission reduction projects around the world generate carbon offsets from activities such as renewable energy, biogas and reforestation.

Carbon offsets are quantified in metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) where one tonne purchased equates to one less tonne of carbon in the atmosphere. Negating our unavoidable emissions is possible through the purchase of carbon offsets.
